Football is back Aug30

Football is back

Thursday night Lexi and I went to the first college football game of the year. Utah hosted Northern Colorado to open up the season. Welcome back football! It was a beautiful night in Salt Lake City. We had a very light rain for about five minutes.  Outside of that, there weren’t many...

SEO Signage

I was recently having a discussion about what causes people to come into a brick-and-mortar store.  We were talking about things like an inviting atmosphere, easy parking, signage, and friendly employees when a lot of similarities popped into my head with SEO. The analogy between physical...

Summer is here

I started up my car to head home and this is what greeted me. I guess summer has arrived in...

The cost of a Facebo...

The mysterious Facebook EdgeRank algorithm is out from the shadows. For the uninitiated, EdgeRank is the secret formula Facebook uses on every friend/page post to determine if it should go in a user’s news feed. When you log into Facebook, you see your long list of pictures, status...

Learning Klout

I’ve seen some stories recently that highlight how Klout is becoming more and more important in the hiring process. I’m not looking for a new job but I was curious how I would stack up. Klout is a service that enumerates someone’s influence in social media. The Klout score is...

Getting around trick...

My work email address some how ended up on some PR mail lists.  I, having essentially nothing to do with news selection, wanted to get off of these lists. I tried to unsubscribe…  No luck. I set up rules to block the sender…  Yet emails were still getting through. After setting...

Review: The Avengers

I caught a preview for The Avengers last night.  The movie is the combination of the Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America characters into one big movie. The beginning of the movie sets up the threat and brings the crew together.  There are funny quips and big fight scenes...

Review: Jericho

I finished watching the last season of the short lived CBS drama Jericho last week. The show takes place in Jericho, Kansas – a city about two hundred miles outside of Denver.  A nuclear blast is seen expanding over Denver and the town is kept in the dark about just what is...

Kicks

Salt Lake has a social sports club that features leagues for flag football, dodgeball, bocce ball, and more.  I’m playing on Lexi’s kickball team and it’s been a ton of fun. Our first game was Thursday night. We play behind a middle school a few blocks away from the station.  Our team was a few people short and we only had 8 to play in the field. The other team had 10 that could play in the field (you can have four outfielders.) It was surprising how few people (on both teams) knew the basic rules of baseball.  I turned two inning-ending double plays solo while playing right-center/in-field. Twice, I caught a ball in the...

Portlandia Apr25

Portlandia

One of Lexi‘s good friends was getting married and she invited me to go to the wedding.  I accepted and we were off to Portland! We flew in Friday afternoon and took the train downtown to our hotel.  We met up with all of the out-of-town guests at a cocktail party in the hotel bar...

Going to the Dogs Apr20

Going to the Dogs

If you’ve been following politics recently, you’ve had the unfortunate pleasure of watching “the dog debates” earlier this week.  This doesn’t exactly seem like on-topic politics to me, but whatever. Well ABC 4’s Chief Political Correspondent Chris Vanocur...

Jailbroken

I bought an iPad about a year and a half ago and I loved it.  I used it at work as an extra screen to monitor social media, as a web browser at home, and as a media player when traveling.  It’s an incredible invention. With that said, some things about the iPad – specifically the operating system iOS – bugged me.  It was a pain to have to go to a few levels of the setting menu to flip wifi on and off.  I hated that there was no number row on the keyboard, even though there was plenty of space.  I was annoyed that I couldn’t download a 50.1 MB podcast over 3G service. I decided to jailbreak the iPad. A lot of...
